Trial by Jury is at the heart of our judicial system

12.00.00am GMT Wed 15th Nov 2006

Responding to the announcement of the Fraud (Trial Without Jury) Bill in the Queen's Speech, Liberal Democrat Shadow Constitutional Affairs Secretary, Simon Hughes MP said:

"The principle of trial by jury is at the heart of our judicial system.

"While there may be some need for different procedures to deal with complex fraud trials, the final decision as to whether someone has been honest or dishonest in a serious case should always be one for a jury.

"Liberal Democrats will oppose this government proposal this year, as we have in the past."
