Sad day for safety on the Thames

Following the Commons vote this afternoon on the Maritime Shipping Statutory Instrument Simon Hughes, MP for Southwark and Bermondsey, said:

"Sadly, the rebellion on the Government benches was not big enough. This is a sad day for all those who have looked after safety on the Thames for so long.

"We all have to hope that the new rules do not allow people with too little experience to be in charge of vessels on the Thames leading to an increase in risk."
