Government climate policy flying in the face of science - Hughes

12.30.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 18th Jun 2009

Commenting on the Government's climate change forecasts, Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Simon Hughes said:

"These predictions are absolutely devastating. Britain is heating up and the seas around us are rising faster than anyone had thought.

"Climate change may still seem like an abstract concept for many in Britain right now, but it will soon affect every part of our lives from the safety of our homes to the food we grow and eat.

"While the Government's scientists give ever louder warnings of disaster, ministers are still going ahead with catastrophic policies like the third runway at Heathrow and a new generation of coal power stations.

"It is sheer lunacy for Government policy to fly in the face of the scientists' predictions.

"Today's climate projections should be a wake up call. The Government must change direction radically and right away. It is time to seriously invest in protecting our future."
